Eli Smith (Arabic) Papers

Notes:

This collection consists of the Arabic papers of Rev. Eli Smith (1801-1857), leading American Protestant missionary at Beirut. It contains his correspondence with several Syrian Protestants and others, including leading figures of the Arab Nahda Butrus al-Bustani and Mikha’il Mishaqa. The collection is at the Houghton Library, Harvard, part of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) fonds with the classification ABC50. It is in three archival boxes, each containing a number of paper folders. The folders have no numbers or classifications marked: I record them in the order I found them in the boxes in 2016; it is possible they may have been misplaced and got into a different order since. Some folders contain parts of old folders with titles, or partial handlists. My understanding is that the Arabic papers were sorted from Smith’s English papers (ABC60) when the latter were sorted and catalogued by J. F. Coakley.
