Kim, 53, first noticed she was arriving at garage sales as they were ending, loading her car with what remained. She tells CNN that she had spent years trying to help her mother with hoarding, before realising the same condition had crept up on her. She now runs a Facebook support group of 2,100 people.\u00a0<\/p>

Prof Nick Neave, director of Northumbria University’s Hoarding Research Group<\/a> and Chair of the UK Hoarding Partnership, tells CNN that the urge to collect is a normal part of human personality and culture. What separates ordinary collecting from hoarding, he says, is trauma. Every person he has ever met with the condition had a traumatic childhood, whether abuse, neglect or chaotic upbringing.\u00a0<\/p>

Heather Matuozzo, founder of Clouds End<\/a>, supports around 300 renters in Birmingham through the Chaos 2 Order<\/a> intervention project with Birmingham City Council<\/a>. She tells CNN that forced clearance by injunction is morally wrong and makes people who hoard worse. She believes the pandemic increased prevalence, as anxious people gathered to feel better in the face of closures.\u00a0<\/p>

Around 14 million Americans are affected by hoarding disorder, with similar rates across Western countries. Two-thirds of people with the condition have at least one other psychiatric condition, and physical conditions such as arthritis and diabetes are common. Hoarding was added to the American Psychiatric Association’s DSM<\/a> in 2013 and recognised by the World Health Organization in 2018.<\/a><\/p>

Dr Carolyn Rodriguez, director of the Stanford Hoarding Disorders Research Program<\/a>, is testing a virtual reality treatment. Nine participants took 360-degree photos of their most cluttered room, and of 30 possessions they wanted to discard. Wearing VR headsets, they practised placing virtual copies into bins for recycling, donation or a virtual garbage truck, before attempting the same task with the real object at home. The sessions run alongside the Buried in Treasures group programme<\/a>, a 16-week peer-led course now running in the United States, Canada and Australia.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
